Fractured Ribs

The casualty with fractured ribs can be in significant distress and pain. This type of injury can reduce the effectiveness of breathing.

In more serious cases a fractured rib may puncture a lung allowing air to leak into the chest cavity, causing a pneumothorax.

Treatment:

  • D.R.S.A.B.C.D.
  • Put the casualty in a semi-sitting position leaning on the injured side in a collar and cuff sling
  • Reassure the casualty
  • Seek medical treatment as soon as possible
  • Monitor the casualty’s breathing
