The skin is the largest organ of the body, with a total area of about 20 square feet. The skin protects the body from the elements, helps to regulate body temperature and permits the sensations of touch,m heat and cold.
The skin has three layers:
- The Epidermis – The outermost layer of skin, this provides a waterproof barrier and creates out skin tone
- The Dermis – This is the layer below the epidermis, it contains the tough connective tissue, hair follicles and sweat glands
- The Hypodermis – This layer is made of fat and connective tissues
