Module 7 – Choking and Airway

Choking and Airway Obstructions occur when there is a partial blockage or a complete blockage of the airway. An airway obstruction is a life-threatening situation and as a first aider you need to be able to differentiate between a partial obstruction and a complete obstruction.

Typical causes of airway obstructions may include, but are not limited to:

  • Relaxation of the airway muscles due to unconsciousness
  • Inhaled foreign body
  • Trauma to the airway
  • Anaphylactic reaction
