Oxygen administration in specific circumstances

Conditions where oxygen is recommended include:

  • During cardiopulmonary resuscitation
  • Bleeding
  • Burns
  • Shock
  • Asthma
  • Anaphylaxis
  • Drowning
  • Decompression illness
  • Poisoning

Oxygen use in persons with stroke and heart attack who do not have signs of shock should be guided by pulse oximetry as excessive oxygen may be harmful in these conditions.  It is suggested that a person suffering from a stroke or chest pain should be not administered oxygen with stroke or chest pain.
